We hear questions from consumers all the time, asking, “Is that low carb?”, "What are the types of vegetarian diets?" or “Oh, that dish is high in fibre!”. Our Test Kitchens are developing new recipes all the time, and to help consumers find types of dishes that suit their lifestyle, we’ve developed internal guidance on nutrient criteria and provided definitions for common vegetarian diets. The below definitions of vegetarian diets are used to define our recipes:
- Lacto-ovo vegetarian: this diet includes dairy and eggs, but excludes meat, fish, seafood and poultry.
- Pescatarian: this diet includes fish, seafood, dairy and eggs, but excludes meat and poultry.
- Vegan: this diet excludes meat, poultry, fish, seafood, dairy, eggs, and foods that contain these products. A vegan recipe should not include these ingredients
- Honey
- Gelatin
- Meat & Poultry Stocks and Broths
- Lard
- Recipe Mixes that contain beef or chicken fat
The below nutrient criteria definitions are based on internal McCormick guidelines*:
